Club Notes for Friday 11th May 2012

On Saturday last our seniors played round 4 of the All County league when they took on Carrickedmond in Pairc na Gael. The evening was dry and calm and it was a James Martin point from play that opened the scoring. This was followed by 2 further points to extend our advantage. Our opponents settled well and played with typical spirit. As a result the visitors moved into a 2 point lead as the half time whistle approached. We pulled back a point before the break to leave the half time score Dromard 0-06 Carrickedmond 0-07. The second half saw an improvement in our performance and at the final whistle we finished ahead on the scoreline Dromard 2-19 Carrickedmond 0-08. On Friday last our special junior league panel travelled to Killashee to take on the local team.  Killashee got a good start which we struggled to recover from.  Our lads battled to the final whistle.  Team on this occasion;  Danny Pettit, Thomas Conefrey, James Conefrey, Mark Murtagh, Michael Reynolds, Niall Berry, Mícheál Reilly, Fergal Berry, Kevin Maguire, Dermot Reilly, Conor Smith, Sean McNerney, Kevin Hourican.  We wish a speedy recovery to Fergal Berry who picked up an injury during the course of the game. Thanks to the physio assistance from the home club. On Sunday last our reserve league div 1 panel travelled to Devine Park to play Mostrim.  The blustery conditions made for difficult playing conditions.  We played into the breeze in the opening half.  A pointed free from Gary Maguire opened the scoring.  The sides were level at 3 points apiece with 10 minutes remaining in the half.  The home side got the last 3 points before the interval leaving the scores Dromard 0-03 Mostrim 0-06. Despite having the assistance of the breeze on the resumption we fell further behind.  We did rally as the game drew to a close but we finished in arrears at the final whistle on the score line Dromard 0-06 Mostrim 0-10.  Team and scores; Gavin McNerney, James Conefrey, Padraig McNerney, Enda Kiernan, Conor Duffy, Kevin Donohoe (0-01), Michael Reilly (0-01), Kieran McStay, Bernard Sheridan, Donal Sheridan (0-01), Sean McNerney, Dermot Reilly, Gary Maguire (0-03) 3 frees.  Subs used; Michael Reynolds and Brendan McLoughlin.  We play Carrickedmond in the senior league in Pairc na Gael next Saturday.  We are also away to Longford Slashers in the reserve league div 3 game on Sunday next. Well done to the Longford players and management on their great win over Wexford in Croke Park last Saturday to claim the National league division 3 title. Special mention to our representatives Damien and Francis on this notable achievement in county colours.  Sincere condolences to the Faughnan family Corglass, the Reilly and Farrell family, Berrinagh and Moyne and to the McAvennia family Corglass on their recent bereavements. On Wednesday last our seniors travelled to McGann Park Kenagh to play round 4 of the All County league.  The game was played under floodlights.  Francis Mc Gee got our opening score of the game - a goal from play after good approach work.  The same player knocked over a point from play followed by another point from play from the boot of Declan Mimnagh.  The home side recorded their opening score a pointed free.  We added a further 5 points from play before half time to leave the scoreline at the break 1-07 to 0-02.  We added a further 2 goals in the second half to stretch our advantage.  The final score was Dromard 3-10 Kenagh 0-04.  Team and scorers;  Damien Sheridan, Paul McGee, Cathal Conefrey, Padraig McNerney, Conor Duffy, Diarmuid Masterson, John Sheridan, Bernard Sheridan, Noel Reynolds, Peadar Faughnan (0-01), Francis McGee (1-03), Peter Masterson, James Martin (0-03), Ronan McEntire (1-00), Declan Mimnagh (1-01).  Subs used; Cian Mimnagh, Enda McEntire (0-01), James Mimnagh, Emmet Masterson (0-01) and Kieran McStay.

On Saturday our special junior league team travelled to play Grattan’s in their excellent new pitch in Dunbeggan.  The home side went 1-01 to no score ahead.  We responded with points from play.  We conceded another goal but picked off a few more points from play, the last of which was a fine long range effort from Michael Reynolds.  The half time score was Dromard 0-07 Grattan’s 2-03.  In the second half we had the assistance of the breeze and our players played very good football with our finishing of a high standard.  The final score was Dromard 0-15 Grattan’s 2-08.  Team and scorers;  Danny Pettit, James Conefrey, Thomas Conefrey, Niall Berry, Michael Reynolds (0-01), Keith Masterson, Dermot Reilly (0-1), Mícheál Reilly (0-02), Kevin Maguire (0-02), Cornie McGinley, Mark Murtagh, Sean Pettit (0-03), Gary Maguire (0-05) 2 frees.  Great to Sean Pettit back in a Dromard jersey.  He certainly didn't lose any of his attacking skills if his performance on Saturday is anything to go by.  Next outing for this team is away to Killashee next Friday at 7.30pm. On Sunday last we travelled the short journey to Monaduff to take on Fr. Manning Gaels in a Reserve league Div. 1 game.  We got off to a good start opening up a 1-03 to no score lead.  The goal came from Donal Sheridan.  It was the turn of the home side to enjoy a good spell that yielded 4 points.  Sean McNerney landed the last point of the half.  The half time score was Dromard 1-04 Fr. Manning Gaels 0-04.  On the resumption we extended our lead adding 4 points.  While our opponents landed scores of their own we held on to finish ahead at the final whistle on the scoreline Dromard 1-10 Fr. On Saturday last our seniors played Clonguish in round 3 of division 1 in Pairc na Gael. The evening was dry with a slight breeze that favoured the visitors in the opening half. We trailed by 3pts to nil before we got our first score on the board - a Cían Mimnagh point from a free. This was followed by a Diarmuid Masterson point from play. Our opponents landed a further 3 points from play before Declan Mimnagh found the net after a good build up. 


Points were exchanged before a second Declan Mimnagh goal tied up the game. A pointed free left us ahead at half time Dromard 2-04 Clonguish 0-09. The men in green had the better of the opening stages of the second half scoring the opening 3 points of the second half to take the lead. We came back to level but the closing stages were hard fought but it was the visitors who landed late points to seal the victory.

On Sunday our div. 3 side played Killoe. The open half exchanges were competitive and scores were hard earned. By half time we had a slim 1-02 to 0-04 lead, the goal coming from a Dermot Reilly effort. Killoe gained the initiative in the second and went on to claim the points on the score line of Dromard 1-07 Killoe 0-14.

On Wednesday last our special junior team had Shroid as visitors.  A pointed free by our opponents opened the scoring.  We responded with 1-01 with the goal coming from Kevin Hourican. Another pointed free from the visitors was followed by a Dermot Reilly goal.  While we came under some pressure for the remainder of the half it was a David Cosgrove point that closed the scoring for the half.  Half time score was Dromard 2-2 Shroid 2-6.  The second half was keenly contested but it was Shroid who led at the finish on the scoreline Dromard 3-04 Shroid 2-12. Great credit goes to our goalie Danny Pettit was brought off a string of top class saves.

On Saturday last our senior team travelled to Clonbony to take on Rathcline in the second round of the All County league. Weather and pitch conditions were very good and it was a Cian Mimnagh free that opened the scoring. The home side replied with a point and this was followed by 5 unanswered points from our team.  Both teams exchanged further points to leave the half time score Dromard 0-07 Rathcline 0-02. A Cian Mimnagh goal on the resumption stretched our advantage. While our opponents pulled back points we held on to the lead until the finish where the full time score was Dromard 3-11 Rathcline 1-04.

On Sunday our division 3 team travelled to Egan Park Forgney for round 2 of this competition. We got the perfect start scoring 2-01 without reply. We continued to enjoy a good deal of possession but we were unfortunate not to add more scores. The home side came more into it as the half wore on and by half time the score was Dromard 2-02 St. Munis 1-04.  The second half saw the teams level for most of the period and it was deadlocked with time nearly up until our opponents landed the match winning score.

We wish senior player Niall Vance the best of luck when he heads to Australia this week.  Niall is a hugely dedicated player and is a permanent feature on our senior team for some time now. The leadership he has provided and his unflinching spirit will be a loss to our senior panel.  Bon Voyage and every best wish Niall, Aine and Dylan.

On Sunday last our senior team travelled to Killoe to play the opening round of the league.  Weather conditions were ideal for football and it was the home side who dominated the early exchanges building up a 1-05 lead before we recorded our first score. A James Martin point opened our account in what turned out to be the last score of the half.  The second half saw us coming back into the game picking off points to close the gap.  However 2 further Killoe goals stretched their lead again and they held on to come out 3-10 to 0-8 winners.

On Saturday our Div 3 team had Abbeylara as visitors.  This was an evenly contested affair with little separating both teams during the game.  At half time we had a 2 point advantage on a scoreline Dromard 1-06 Abbeylara 0-07.  The second half see sawed with both teams enjoying spells of dominance but it was Abbeylara to finished the stronger.  The final score was Dromard 1-09 Abbeylara 1-13.

Our Reserve league 1 played their third game of this competition when they had Longford Slashers as visitors.  Having the assistance of the breeze in the first half we got off to a good start with Sean Mc Nerney finding the net. This was followed up with points from the play and a further Noel Reynolds goal leaving the half time score Dromard 2-08 Longford Slashers 0-01.  The visitors did come back into it scoring a number of points from play.  At the full time whistle the score was Dromard 4-13 Longford Slashers 0.8.

Our special junior league game scheduled to be played on Sunday last is deferred to Wednesday April 4th. Next Sunday we play Killoe in Clonee in the All County Div 1 league at 2.30pm. Our reserve league 3 team play Abbeylara in Dromard on Saturday in Dromard at 6pm.  


Well done to Longford seniors on gaining promotion to Div 2 for 2013 by virtue of their draw on Saturday last against Tipperary. 


The ladies club are holding a fundraiser on Saturday night 31st March at 8.30pm in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva. A night of fashion, health and beauty is planned. There will be health, fitness and nutrition advice from personal trainer Orlagh McGrane. Top make-up artist Azelia Jackson will be on hand to give a make-up demonstration and share her tips. There will be displays including jewellery, handbags, accessories and make-up including MAC and Benefit. Guests will be greeted with a champagne reception with goody bags for the first 15 ladies. There are great prizes to be won in the raffle and a prize for best dressed lady. Tickets can be bought for €10 from any member of the ladies club and in local shops and businesses. Your support would be greatly appreciated and a great night out is promised.

Club Notes for Friday 23rd March 2012

Tommy Flynn will give a talk on the early years in GAA in the Longford Arms Hotel on Thursday 22nd March 2012. Tommy whose family has long associations with the GAA (he is grandson to Jimmy Flynn who was county chairman during the glory years when Longford won the nation league) has researched the subject and will give his talk at 8.30pm. This should appeal to all GAA fans in the area. Admission is free. 


On St. Patrick's Day our reserve league 1 panel made the short journey to Fr. Mc Gee Park to play round 2 of this competition.  Rain showers before throw in left conditions slippery.  However both teams adjusted serving up an entertaining hour's football.  


Gary Maguire was our scorer in chief on the day and it was him who got our opening 1-04 of the game, the goal coming from a penalty resulting when he was fouled.  Points from Donal Sheridan and Emmet Masterson brought our tally at half time to 1-06 compared to 0-10 for the home team.  


The second half was a tight affair with little separating the sides throughout.  We were able to edge ahead early in the second half and managed to hold on to a lead until the final whistle.  The final score was Dromard 1-13 Colmcille 0-14.

Well done to Longford seniors who preserved their 100% winning record when accounting for Antrim on Sunday last in Pearse Park.  Best of luck to all again when they travel to Thurles to take on Tipperary on Saturday next.

Saturday last saw the club competition commence. Our Reserve league 1 team had Clonguish as visitors to Pairc na Gael. Good weather made for ideal conditions for the game. Two Kevin Donohoe attacks from defence led to our two opening scores from

play. The balance of play was evenly contested with both sides exchanging points. We added a point from a free and three points from play before the half time whistle sounded. The half time score was deadlocked at Dromard 0-06 Clonguish 0-06. The second half was also keenly contested. We opened a two point lead by virtue of 2 scored frees. However the visitors finished strongly scoring 1-03 to finish 1-09 to 0-08 winners. We play Colmcille in round 2 of this league on St. Patrick’s Day next Saturday at 12.30pm in Fr. McGee Park.


Our special junior league team were defeated by Kenagh. We have no game in this competition this weekend. 


Well done to Longford on recording a fine win away to Sligo on Sunday last. It is a great achievement to be topping the division with four rounds played. Best of luck to players and management when they take on Antrim in Pearse Park on Sunday next. Hard luck to our under 21’s who were narrowly defeated by Louth on Wednesday last.
