O’Byrne Cup: Congratulations to the Longford senior footballers on their tremendous win over All Ireland champions Dublin in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday last. As in recent games, Dromard’s Diarmuid Masterson and Francis McGee again both featured prominently with Paul McGee also coming on as a second-half substitute in place of his brother. Francis scored three points and was to the fore in attack throughout the game, getting the better of his direct opponent Johnny Cooper in a great contest. Playing at left half back, Diarmuid defended extremely well and surged forward to great effect, particularly in the second half. Congratulations to Denis Connerton, Enda Macken and all involved on this morale-boosting win ahead of the league campaign. Best of luck to Diarmuid, Francis, Paul and the rest of the county panel in the O’Byrne Cup final against Meath in Navan on Sunday (2.30pm). All Dromard supporters are encouraged to get behind the team in Navan, especially given the commitment and dedication of our three senior players to the County team.
Hastings Cup: Well done to the county under 21 footballers on their win over Offaly on Saturday last. The result qualified Longford for the semi-final of the competition against neighbours Cavan. Best of luck to the panel and management as they continue their preparations for the upcoming Leinster U21 football championship.
