O’Byrne Cup: A week of mixed fortunes for the Longford senior footballers ended on a very positive note when their four point win over Wicklow was enough to seal a semi-final place against All Ireland champions Dublin. The game will be played in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday next at 2pm and is ideal preparation ahead of Longford’s National League Division Three campaign. The McGee brothers, Francis and Paul, along with Diarmuid Masterson all featured in Longford’s mid-week defeat to Westmeath as well as in the win over Wicklow on Sunday last. In the latter fixture, Diarmuid (0-1 from play) and Francis (0-2 from play) both played from the start, with Paul McGee coming on as a second-half substitute in the Wicklow game. Best of luck to Dromard’s representatives and the rest of the county panel in Sunday’s appetising fixture against Dublin.

Hastings Cup: Well done to the county under 21 footballers on their hard-fought draw with neighbour’s Leitrim in the second round of the Hastings Cup played in Cloone on Saturday last. This result puts Longford in a strong position to secure a semi-final place in this competition as the team continues its preparations for the upcoming Leinster U21 football championship.
