Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 14th Sept 2012

On Thursday our u14s travelled to Mc Gann Park Kenagh to take on St. Dominic’s/Moydow Óg in the opening round of the special u14 league. Our young team gave of their best on the evening but we trailed at the final whistle.  Team and scorers;  Barry Smith, Jason Murtagh (0-1), Daragh O’Toole, Éanna Mimnagh, Martin Mc Stay, Joseph Hagan (0-1) 1 free, Dylan Mc Cormack (1-0), Ronan Blakely (0-1), Cíarán Murphy, Luke Mc Entire and Niall Gray. On Friday last our minors played Wolfe Tones in the final of the league. Maguire Park Ballinalee was the venue and with both sides registering a win in their two previous league outings it had all the ingredients for an exciting final.  It turned out to be a very entertaining and high scoring game with very good standard football played from start to finish.  Following a similar pattern of our earlier games we were slow to get out of the blocks and we found ourselves conceding 2-2 in the first 10 minutes before we raised a flag.  A Bryan Mc Cormack point from play opened our account which a quickly followed by a Peadar Kiernan point also from play.  After a shaky start our defence had reached the pace of the game, closing down their opponent’s space and tightening up their marking.  Midfield were now exerting more influence and while our forwards were very working hard we didn’t get the scoring return our procession deserved.  A Dylan Masterson goal brought the scores back to 2-4 to 1-3 and with Wolfe Tones responding with a point it was then we landed 3 points from play coming from Neil Cosgrove, Peter Mimnagh and Bryan Mc Cormack to narrow the gap to 2 points.  With another Wolfe Tones point coming before the half time whistle leaving the score at the break St. Francis 1-6 Wolfe Tones 2-6.  A fully committed Dromard took the field after half time and we got a great boost when Peter Mimnagh found the net, followed by an inspirational long range effort from Ronan Smith.   This was cancelled out when our opponents landed 1-1.  We were enjoying plenty of procession at this stage registering a significant of wides.  On another day we could have picked up more frees but decisions seem to go against us on the day.   Points were exchanges during the course of the half but we trailed by 4 points with time running out.  A point by Conal Murphy after a good run narrowed the gap and matters were level when Niall Mc Manus converted a penalty after Peadar Kiernan was fouled.  We pushed hard for the winner but had a couple of near misses.  Wolfe Tones broke upfield and won a free that was scored.  This proved to be the final action of the game.  The full time score was St. Francis 3-10 Wolfe Tone 3-11.  While things didn’t run smoothly for us on the day our team gave it their all on the evening and can be proud of their efforts on the day.  We have the another opportunity of achieving success next weekend when we play the championship final again against Wolfe Tones with Pearse Park the venue and 4pm the starting time.  Team and scorers;  Eóin McNerney,  Barry Connell, Stephen Kenny, Liam Doherty, Ronan Smith (0-1), Neil Cosgrove (0-1), Niall Mc Manus (1-2) 1-0 pen, 1 free, 1 45, Peadar Kiernan (0-1), Dylan Masterson (1-0), Conal Murphy (0-1), Peter Mimnagh (1-2), Bryan Mc Cormack (0-2).  Subs used; Joseph Reynolds and Robert Cooke.  Other subs on the day were Cillian Hourican, Brian Kiernan, Gary Kilkenny, Patrick Mimnagh and Barry Smith.  Thanks to all who turned out to support on the team on the evening.   As Saturday’s game is the last of the season we hope that our supporters will once again come out in numbers to get behind the team who along with their management team of Kevin Hourican and Peter Crossan have put in a huge effort over the year. On Saturday last our u12s played in a tournament that Longford Slashers hosted.  Sunny weather made for very suitable conditions on the day.  We were a group with Skyrne, Portarlington and Longford Slashers.  Our first game was against Skyrne of Meath.  We trailed 1-1 at the start but responded well with 3 goals and by half time we ahead St. Francis 3-1 Skyrne 1-3.  The second half saw our team push on extending their lead to finish ahead on the score line St. Francis 4-06 Skyrne 1-04.  Panel and scorers; Ollie Duffy, Darragh O’Toole, Jason Murtagh (0-2), Gareth O Hara, Joseph Hagan (1-0), Luke Mc Entire (2-4) 1 free, Aaron Farrell, Cíarán Murphy, Cían Gray, Stephen Donohoe (1-0), Liam Donohoe and David Donohoe.  Next game was against Portarlington.  It took us a while to settle and we trailed at half time.  The second half saw our lads come right back into it but we ran out of time at the finish and trailed at the final whistle.  Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 7th Sept 2012.

On Tuesday last all roads led to Clonboney where our u13s played the final of the league against Shannon Gaels.  Having come second best in the earlier round of the league against the same opposition, everyone was fully aware that our team would need to deliver a big performance if they were to come out on top.  A good sized crowd travelled in support of the team.  While the evening was dry a strong breeze was present through the game. Having the benefit of the breeze in the first half the team started in determined fashion. We opened our scoring with a brace of Luke McEntire points. We were enjoying a fair share of possession which we were having good success converting into scores. We found the net on two occasions in the first half both coming from the ever alert Conor McGauran. At half time the score was St. Francis 2-14 Shannon Gaels 0-3.  The second half saw the home side come out and really take the game to us.  They picked off some fine scores closing the gap. This pressure asked questions of our goalkeeper and his defence which they were able to respond positively to.  Much jubilation greeted the full time whistle as we ran out winners 3-18 to 1-10.  Joint captains Martin Mc Stay and Dylan McCormack who led by example on the field accepted the shield on behalf of their teammates from Minor Secretary Tommy McLoughlin.  Team and scorers.  Ollie Duffy, Jason Murtagh (0-1) 1 free, Éanna Mimnagh, Gareth O Hara, Daragh O’Toole (0-1), Luke McEntire (0-7) 3 frees, Martin Mc Stay (0-1), Joseph Hagan (0-1), Dylan Mc Cormack (1-3), Ronan Blakely (0-4) 1 free, Conor McGauran (2-0).  Subs used.  Niall Gray, Cíarán Murphy and Cian Gray.  Other subs on the evening were Stephen Donohoe and Aaron Farrell.  Absent on the evening were Gabriel Gray, Liam Donohoe, Aaron Darcy, Aaron McErlean, Shane Grimes and Jason Grimes who had all played their part during the campaign.  A big thanks to the Shannon Gaels club for providing some refreshments for our players after the game.  Thanks to our support who came out in great numbers to cheer on the team.  We had a well attended reception later that evening for the panel at the clubhouse. A big thanks to the dedicated mentors who were involved with this group during the year, namely John McNaboe, Paul Mc Entire and Emmet Masterson.

On Wednesday we attended a play and stay u10 blitz held in Pearse Park.  We had two teams on the evening who played games against Ballymore, Shroid, Killoe and Longford Slashers.  Along with playing the games the players had the opportunity to go up to the presentation area to hold the National League Div 3 cup and the Sean Connolly aloft.  The children enjoyed their evening immensely.  Players involved on the evening; Aaron Farrell, Oisín O’Toole, James Brady, Cathal Reilly, Jason Grimes, Siobhan Murphy, Ian McLoughlin, Nichole Conboy, Rory O’Toole, Aaron Conboy, Aaron Darcy, Daniel Conboy, Jamie Conboy, Fionn Hourican, Gavin Reilly, Brianna Murphy, Callum Mc Entire, Karen McLoughlin, Sean Conboy, Christopher Grimes, Leah Duffy.  On Thursday last our u12s had their final All County blitz in Monaduff.  Our 2 teams played teams from Clonbroney, St. Vincent’s and Longford Slashers.  Well done to all players who attended and played well on the evening.  Players involved here were, Jason Murtagh, Luke Mc Entire, Fionn Hourican, Cian Gray, David Donohoe, Liam Donohoe, Cíarán Murphy, Stephen Donohoe, Daragh O’Toole, Joseph Hagan, Joshua Gray, Aaron McErlean, Aaron Darcy, Conor Mc Gauran, Ollie Duffy and Gareth O’Hara. This week wraps up the u8, u10 and u12 blitz season.  Great credit goes to Longford GAA Coaching and Development for the excellent program of blitzes and activities laid on during the year. On Thursday our u16s played St. Mel’s in the championship semi final in Pairc na Gael.  Having had a tough game the previous week, this turned out to be an equally competitive encounter.  Weather conditions were ideal and it was the visitors who made the early running having 2-3 on the scoreboard before Bryan McCormack opened the Dromard account with a well taken goal.  Dromard gradually clawed their way back into this well contested U16 championship semi final with further points from Bryan McCormack and a well worked goal by Dylan McCormack before the break keeping Dromard in touch.  The half time score was St. Francis 2-02 St. Mel’s 2-07. Dromard took the game to Shroid early in the second half and Bryan McCormack with two goals in couple of minutes after the restart put Dromard in the driving seat. Points by Dylan Masterson, Liam Doherty and Conal Murphy narrowed the gap further. Dromard could have went ahead with a bit more composure in front of goals when shooting for points but it was Shroid who again took the initiative and pressed on to lead by five points with 10 minutes to go. Dromard refused to lie down and Dylan Masterson started the Dromard revival from the full forward position with 2 points before Bryan McCormack burst through the Shroid defence and buried the ball in the net for the score of the game. Shroid struck for a late point to lead by one in the dying stages. Dromard kept pressing and deserved a second chance with a late late equaliser by Conal Murphy.  Full time score St. Francis 6-10 St. Mel’s 6-10.  Gary Kilkenny, Cillian Hourican, Joseph Reynolds, Liam Doherty (0-1), Barry Connell, Dylan Masterson (0-3), Peadar Kiernan, Conal Murphy (0-2), Martin Mc Stay, Dylan Mc Cormack (1-0), Bryan Mc Cormack (5-4).  Sub used, Brian Kiernan.  Other subs on the day were Barry Smith, Patrick Mimnagh and Oisín Hourican. On Saturday we played our second final of the week this time it was the turn of the u12s with Shannon Gaels again providing the opposition and Pearse Park the venue.  The weather was dry and the Pearse Park sod was in prime condition.  We had the assistance of a stiff breeze in the first half.  We got the opening score of the game when Joseph Hagan pointed from play.  Aaron Farrell added a second from play before Shannon Gaels pulled a point back through a pointed free.  It was at this stage that we pushed on and landed 3-7 without reply, the goals coming from Joseph Hagan and Ronan Bleakley.  At half time the score was St. Francis 3-11 Shannon Gaels 1-1.  The second half saw our opponents stage a recovery scoring 3 goals to narrow the margin.  While we were able to score 3 important points in the half that ensured that we were able to hold out for our second title of the week.  Final score was St. Francis 3-14 Shannon Gaels 4-04.  On this occasion team captain Joseph Hagan received the shield on behalf of his teammates from county minor board secretary Tommy McLoughlin.  Well done to all players who all played their roles on the day and in the previous round of the competition.  Team and scorers; Ollie Duffy, Jason Murtagh, Cíarán Murphy, Darragh O’Toole, Gareth O Hara, Joseph Hagan (2-7) 2 45s,1 sideline & 1 free, Luke Mc Entire (0-4) 1 sideline, Ronan Blakely (1-2) 1 free, Aaron Darcy, Aaron Farrell (0-1), Conor McGauran.  Subs used.  Cian Gray, Liam Donohoe, Stephen Donohoe, Aaron McErlean, Shane Grimes.  Other subs available on the day were David Donohoe, Fionn Hourican, Joshua Gray, Jason Grimes and James Brady.  Gabriel Gray who was unavoidably missing on the day had also played a key part of this competition.  We had a homecoming at the clubhouse afterwards where the players had a meal awaiting them.  Thanks to the minor club committee who organised this.  Last but not least a big thanks to team trainer Paul Mc Entire who has put in a great effort with this group all season and indeed anyone else who has assisted with preparations in anyway.  Our minors had Carrigallen as visitors to Pairc na Gael for a useful challenge on Sunday last.  Our minors play their league final this Friday against Wolfe Tones with Ballinalee the venue and throw in time of 6.45pm.  Our juveniles are down to play Shroid in Shroid in the championship replay Monday September 10th.  Our u14s commence an u14 special league competition with an away game with St. Dominic’s due to played this Sunday.  Best wishes to our senior men who take on Colmcille in the championship on Sunday next and our senior ladies who play Carrickedmond in their championship final also on Sunday.  Good luck to all our students who return to school this week or who are starting out in colleges.              

Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 31^st August 2012

On Monday last our minors played their minor championship quarter final in Pairc na Gael with Colmcille providing the opposition.  Having had two good victories on route to this stage, preparations had gone well in the build-up.  However, we didn't settle into the game early on and we found ourselves in significant arrears as the half time whistle approached. The loss of Robert Cooke early in the first half and Liam Doherty in the second were both bad blows to the team, but one thing about this group is that they never give up. A good move that Conal Murphy finished to the net on the stoke of half time was the tonic we needed going in at the break.  The half time score was St. Francis 1-04 St. Colmcille's 2-09.  A completely different Dromard team arrived in the second half.  From the throw in, when team captain Ronan Smith powered up the field to score an inspiring point from the centre half back position and right through the half to the final whistle the team showed tremendous character scoring 2-08 to get themselves right back into the contest.  With Stephen Kenny now dominant in the full back line, and the usual steady display by Barry Connell, and Neil Cosgrove taking control at midfield freeing up Bryan McCormack and Peadar Kiernan to power forward and Peter Mimnagh contributing 2-02 from open play the team were on song.  It was Dromard who were gaining control as the half progressed and were it not for a couple of near misses, points where goals could have been taken, or indeed the clock being against us while we were in the ascendancy, we could have come away with a result. Best wishes to St. Colmcille's in the remainder of the competition.  The minors had a useful challenge on Sunday last against St. Faithleachs in Pairc na Gael. On Wednesday evening we hosted an u8 blitz.  The bad weather during the day affected the number of clubs that travelled.  Shroid made the trip and played games against our 3 teams on the evening.  Players in attendance were Sean Conboy, Aaron Conboy, Christopher Grimes, Ian McLoughlin, Shane O Hara, Eóin Palin, Ódhran Gray, Ryan Darcy, Niall McLoughlin, William McEntire, Joshua McLoughlin, Óisin Conboy, Nichole Conboy, Ríanna Lennon, Paige Robinson, Brianna Murphy, Siobhan Murphy, Louise Tierney, Kate McEntire, Naoíse Hourican, Lauren Conboy. On Thursday last our under 16’s travelled to Keenan Park Ardagh to play our opening round of the championship.  Weather and  pitch conditions were ideal.  It was the Ardagh players who took control from the start and had 1-01 on the board without reply.  We gradually came more into the game and began to pick off some scores.  By half time we were ahead 3-04 to 2-05.  The second half was a hard fought affair with both sides having to work hard for their scores.  The home side drew level midway through the half but our lads dug deep again to open up a 3 point lead.  At this stage our opponents pushed hard to narrow the gap but heroic defending kept our lines intact.  A breakaway goal by Conal Murphy in the dying moments decided the issue.  Great credit to all players who worked really hard on the evening and showed great spirit throughtout. On Saturday our under 10’s took part in a tournament hosted by the Cavan club Drumlane.  Our first game in our group was against Lacken. Our team played really well in this outing and came out on top.  Panel and scorers; Ryan O’Connor, Joshua Gray, Gareth O’Hara, Ollie Duffy (1-00), Aaron Farrell, Daniel Conboy (1-01) 1 free, Jamie Conboy (3-01), Matt Duffy (2-01), Jason Grimes (1-00), Ian McLoughlin, Sean Conboy, Aaron Conboy.  Our second outing in the group was against West Cavan amalgamation Dernacrieve Gaels (Swanlinbar & Corlough).  Despite the best efforts of our players we were behind at the full time whistle.  Panel and scorers;  Ryan O’Connor, Joshua Gray, Gareth O’Hara (0-01), Ollie Duffy, Aaron Farrell (1-00), Daniel Conboy (0-01), Jamie Conboy, Matt Duffy (0-02) 2 frees, Jason Grimes, Ian McLoughlin, Sean Conboy, Aaron Conboy.  We qualified for the semi-final and once again we were pitted against Cavan opposition in Butlersbridge.  This was a very keenly contested game which ended on the score St. Francis 3-03 Butlersbridge 3-05.  Panel and scorers; Ryan O’Connor, Joshua Gray, Gareth O’Hara, Ollie Duffy, Aaron Farrell, Daniel Conboy (0-01) 1 free, Jamie Conboy (1-00), Matt Duffy (2-01), Jason Grimes, Ian McLoughlin, Sean Conboy, Aaron Conboy.  Well done to all players who attended and performed so well on the day.  Thanks to anyone who helped out on the day.  Thanks to the Drumlane club for the invitation to take part.  Well done to Liam Doherty who narrowly missed out on a medal finishing fourth in the under 16 community games 1500m finals held in Athlone over the weekend.  The versatile Liam had a busy week competing in the All Ireland Fleadh as well as representing his club in minor and juvenile championship games.

We have a busy week ahead on the playing fields.  On Tuesday we take on Shannon Gaels in the under 13 league final in Clonboney at 7pm.  On Thursday we have under 12 blitz venues and times to be confirmed.  On Thursday as well we play St. Mel’s in the under 16 championship semi-final in Pairc na Gael at 7pm.  On Saturday our under 12’s play Shannon Gaels in the league final in Pearse Park at 1pm. 

Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 24th August 2012

On Saturday last our under 12’s travelled to Clonboney to play Shannon Gaels in the league. Dromard played with the aid of the breeze in the first half but it was the home side who got the first two points of the game.  Points were exchanged by both sides until Stephen Donohoe found the net with a well finished goal. Ronan Bleakley got our second goal as half time approached.  The half time score was St. Francis 2-07 Shannon Gaels 0-07.  In the second half our spirited opponents exerted strong pressure, however good goalkeeping and tenacious defending by our players kept our lines intact.    All players performed well on the day and held out to finish ahead on the scoreline of St. Francis 5-14 Shannon Gaels 1-13.  Team and scorers;  Ollie Duffy, Jason Murtagh, Cían Gray, Ciaran Murphy, Gareth O’Hara, Luke McEntire (2-03), Daniel O’Connor, Ronan Bleakley (1-05), Conor McGauran (0-01), Aaron Farrell (1-02), Stephen Donohoe (1-00), Joshua Gray.  Our under 13’s are due to play Shannon Gaels in their league final on Tuesday 28^th August. We didn't participate in the under10 blitz last Wednesday as it clashed with our parish's Blessing of Graves ceremonies that took place on the same evening.  We host an under 8 blitz in Pairc na Gael this Wednesday.  Our under 10’s play in an under 10 tournament in Drumlane in Cavan this Saturday.  Our minors play Colmcille in the semi-final of the B championship this Monday in Pairc na Gael at 7.30pm. On Monday last our under 8’s, under 10’s and under 12’s played Carrigallen as part of their August bank holiday festival.  The three groups had enjoyable games with the home club and we sincerely thank the Carrigallen club for extending the invitation to take part.  The under 8’s on duty were, Alan Corcoran, Ronan Corcoran, Rory O’Toole, Christopher Grimes, Ian McLoughlin, Shane O’Hara, Ódhran Gray, Ben O’Reilly, Adam O’Reilly, Niall McLoughlin, Rian Tuite, Nichole Conboy, Leah Duffy, Siobhan Murphy, Bríanna Murphy, Louise Tierney, Sean Conboy, Aaron Conboy, Lauren Conboy, Aaron Gray.  The under 10 panel was Ollie Duffy, Matt Duffy, Aaron Farrell, Fionn Hourican, Stephen Donohoe, Jason Grimes, Daniel Conboy, James Brady, Oisín O’Toole, Karen McLoughlin, Shauna Hagan, Jamie Conboy and Joshua Gray.  The under 12’s on duty were, Luke McEntire, Daragh O’Toole, Jason Murtagh, Ronan Bleakley, Cíarán Murphy, Gareth O’Hara, Cían Gray, Shane Grimes, Daniel O’Connor, Joseph Hagan, Gabriel Gray, Aoífe Brady, Shauna Hagan, Aaron Farrell, Jason Grimes and James Brady.  Thanks to all the parents who attended and provided transport.  On Monday evening our minors took on Ardagh in the second round of the C championship in Pairc na Gael.  Heavy down pours made for difficult playing conditions.  The visitors were forced to field without their influential county minor Cillian Farrell.  This setback didn't seem to affect the Ardagh men as they took an early foothold in the game.  Their dominance continued through the half but we got a lucky break before half time when we scored a goal against the run of play.  The score at half time was St. Francis 1-05 Ardagh 0-06.  The second half opened with a Dromard goal but this was cancelled out by the visitors with points from play.  The game was evenly balanced through this second half but our lads hung on for a hard earned win.  Team on the day;  Eóin McNerney, Stephen Kenny, Neil Cosgrove, Ronan Smith, Cillian Hourican, Niall McManus, Barry Connell, Peadar Kiernan, Bryan McCormack, Brian Kiernan, Joseph Reynolds.  Subs on the day; Gary Kilkenny, Barry Smith, Patrick Mimnagh.  While great credit goes to the lads for getting over this hurdle a downside was we picked up a couple of knocks to add to our lengthy injury list. On Tuesday our under 14’s travelled to Clonboney to take on Shannon Gaels in their 3^rd round of the championship.  Sunny weather made for ideal conditions.  The home side opened the scoring with a point.  Our boys responded with an unanswered 1-03, the goal coming from Ronan Bleakley.  Both sides picked off further points to leave the score at half time St. Francis 1-08 Shannon Gaels 0-06.  After the break the home side responded well scoring 1-05 to take the lead.  We weren't finished yet and we found the net twice but Shannon Gaels got the vital scores at the end to come out on top on the score St. Francis 3-10 Shannon Gaels 2-15.  Team and scorers;  Oisín Hourican, Martin McStay, Daragh O’Toole, Jason Murtagh (0-01), Cíarán Murphy, Joseph Hagan, Luke McEntire (0-01), Dylan McCormack (0-02) 2  45s, Gareth O’Hara (1-01), Ronan Bleakley (2-04), Niall Gray (0-01).  Subs used;  Fíachra Gray and Cían Gray.  Well done to all the players who really gave it everything on the day.

On Friday our u12s had a useful practice game with Arva.  Panel on duty here were, Aaron McErlean, Liam Donohoe, Conor McGauran, Cían Gray, Joseph Hagan, Stephen Donohoe, Jason Murtagh, Daniel O’Connor, Jason Grimes, Shane Grimes, Gabriel Gray, Ronan Bleakley, Ollie Duffy, Daragh O’Toole, Aaron McErlean.  On Saturday morning our under 8’s and under 10’s also travelled to Arva to take on the home teams in practice games.  Players involved were Oisín O’Toole, Rory O’Toole, Karen McLoughlin, Ian McLoughlin, Niall McLoughlin, Alan Corcoran, Ronan Corcoran, Ollie Duffy, Matt Duffy, Jason Grimes, Christopher Grimes, Aoífe Brady, James Brady, Aaron Darcy, Ryan Darcy, Stephen Donohoe, Rian Tuite, Daniel Conboy, Joshua Gray, Jamie Conboy and Shane O’Hara.  Sisters Enya and Orla Rabey on holiday from Guernsey and cousins to the Bradys from Ballyduffy joined in the fun and indeed showed great skills and abilities.  This week activities sees us play St. Dominic’s/Moydow Óg in the under 13 league in Kenagh at 7.30pm on Tuesday.  We play Shannon Gaels away in the under 12 league on Saturday next at 12 noon.  Best of luck to the seniors who play Fr. Manning Gaels in the next round of the championship this Thursday. On Monday last our u13s played Longford Slashers in the u13 league in Pairc na Gael.  The evening was ideal for the game.  Both sides served up an excellent evening's football in this evenly balanced contest.  Our players finished ahead at the final whistle.  Players on duty here were Ollie Duffy, Daragh O Toole, Jason Murtagh, Dylan Mc Cormack, Enna Mimnagh, Joseph Hagan, Ronan Blakely, Gabriel Gray, Conor Mc Gauran, Niall Gray, Cian Gray, Gareth O Hara, Shane Grimes, Aaron Mc Erlean, Aaron Farrell, Aaron Darcy, Stephen Donohoe.  On Tuesday our u14 panel traveled to Maguire Park to take on Clonbronney in our second game of the championship.  Heavy rain all through the game left conditions difficult both teams.  It was Clonbroney who opened the scoring with a goal.  A Ronan Blakely point was Dromard's reponse but the home side struck with another goal.  The half continued with the scores coming on a very regular basis.  By half time the score was St. Francis 4-6 Clonbroney 4-1.  The second half saw plenty more goals converted with both side having good phases of dominance.  Our boys kept up a great level of effort and were ahead at the final whistle on the score St. Francis 9-10 Clonbroney 7-3.  Team and scorers.  Oisin Hourican, Jason Murtagh (0-1), Daragh O Toole, Ciaran Murphy, Enna Mimnagh, Joseph Hagan, Luke Mc Entire (3-0), Gareth O Hara (0-1), Dylan Mc Cormack (2-2), Ronan Blakely (2-5) 1 free, Niall Gray (2-1).  Next game is this Tuesday away to Shannon Gaels at 7.30pm.  On Wednesday our u8s traveled to Leo Casey Park Ballymahon to play in a blitz.  We played games against Ballymahon/Forgney and Granard.  Well done to all players who attended and played so well.  Thanks to all parents who travelled.  Players who took part were Matt Duffy, Leah Duffy, Ian Mc Loughlin, Rian Tuite, Shane O Hara, Alan Corcoran, Ronan Corcoran, Rory O Toole, Ryan Darcy and Niall Mc Loughlin.  On Thursday our u12s traveled to Kenagh for an All County blitz.  We played teams from the Carrick Sarsfields and Killoe clubs.  Well done to all players who attended and performed so well.  Thanks to the parents who provided transport or helped in any way.  Players who were involved were; Luke Mc Entire, Daragh O Toole, Jason Murtagh, Gabriel Gray, Gareth O Hara, Aaron Farrell, Daniel O Connor, Joshua Gray, Fionn Hourican, Aaron Darcy and Ronan Blakely.  On Thursday next our u12s are away to Shannon Gaels at 7.30pm.  On Monday August 6th our minors play Ardagh in their second round of the championship in Pairc na Gael, on Tuesday the u14s travel to Shannon Gaels to play championship and on Thursday the u16s play Clonbroney in Pairc na Gael in the 1st round of the championship.  Best of luck to all in these fixtures.

Your support will be very much appreciated. On Tuesday last our u16 played St. Dominic’s/Moydow Óg in the special under 16 league in Pairc na Gael.  Well done to all players who gave of their best on the evening and despite this they trailed at the final whistle.  Players on duty were Barry Smith, Cillian Hourican, Brian Kiernan, Mark Donohoe, Daniel Gray, Niall Ronan, Bryan McCormack, Peadar Kiernan, Joseph Reynolds, Martin McStay, Gary Kilkenny, Dylan McCormack and Patrick Mimnagh.  On Wednesday we hosted an under 8 blitz in Pairc na Gael. While the rain earlier in the day and on the evening affected the turnout we still had teams from Longford Slashers and Carrick Sarsfields who travelled.  We had 2 teams on the day that had games with the visitors.  Well done to all children who were present and had an enjoyable evening’s football.  Players on duty were, Ian McLoughlin, Niall McLoughlin, Shane O’Hara, Matt Duffy, Thomas Maguire, Rory O’Toole, Ryan Darcy, Ben O’Reilly, Aisling Farrell, Kate O’Connor, Louise Tierney, Leah Duffy, Kate McEntire, William McEntire and Christopher Grimes.  We host an under 10 blitz this Wednesday in Pairc na Gael at 7pm.  On Thursday our under 12’s had a useful practice game against Killoe in Killoe.  Players and scorers; Ollie Duffy, Niall Gray, Jason Murtagh, Cían Gray, Cíarán Murphy, Daragh O’Toole, Gabriel Gray, Joseph Hagan (0-01), Luke McEntire (1-00), Aaron Darcy, Ronan Bleakley (1-01), Gareth O’Hara (0-01), Jason Grimes, Stephen Grimes, Shane Grimes (1-01), Joshua Gray.  On Saturday last our under 12’s were involved in the Gowna under 12 blitz tournament.  The weather was favourable and all involved had a very enjoyable day's football.  Our group pitted us against Summerhill, Fingallians, and Denn.  Our opening game was against Meath's Summerhill.  This was a very good performance by our players in this evenly matched contest.  The game ended in a draw St. Francis 2-04 Summerhill 1-07.  Players and scorers; Ollie Duffy, Daragh O’Toole, Jason Murtagh (1-01), Cíarán Murphy, Luke McEntire (0-03), Ronan Bleakley, Cían Gray, Gareth O’Hara (1-00), Jason Grimes and Gabriel Gray. Our under 16’s had two outings in the special league this past week. On Tuesday last they travelled to Maguire Park to play Clonbroney in the special league.  This was a high scoring game with little separating the sides throughout.  By half time the score was St. Francis 3-06 Clonbroney 2-04.  The second half followed a similar pattern with the scores coming thick and fast.  At the full time whistle we shaded it St. Francis 4-12 Clonbroney 4-08.  Team and scorers;  Oisín Hourican, Cillian Hourican, Joseph Reynolds, Barry Connell, Brian Kiernan, Dylan Masterson (0-02), Liam Doherty (0-02), Martin McStay, Peadar Kiernan (0-03), Dylan McCormack (2-00), Conal Murphy (2-05).  Subs used; Gary Kilkenny, Barry Smith, Patrick Mimnagh and Daniel Gray. On Sunday last our under 14’s played Shannon Gaels in the championship in Pairc na Gael. Both teams have played each other on a few occasions this year and each time there is little to choose between the sides.  This was a high scoring, end to end encounter played in a very sporting manner.  A Dylan McCormack free opened the scoring following a foul on Niall Gray.  The visitors responded with a goal and 2 points.  A total of five goals were registered in the first half with Dromard scoring three, two of them coming from Dylan McCormack and one from Cíarán Murphy. By half time we were ahead on the score line St. Francis 3-06 Shannon Gaels 2-06.  A Cíarán Murphy point extended our lead, however our opponents we able to get 3 decisive goals during the second half.  While our players picked off some good points and were it not for very good goalkeeping and last ditch defending Shannon Gaels were able to keep their net intact.  The full time score was St. Francis 3-11 Shannon Gaels 5-08.  Well done to our players who all played very well on the day.  Team and scorers; Gareth O’Hara, Jason Murtagh, Daragh O’Toole, Éanna Mimnagh, Martin McStay, Joseph Hagan, Luke McEntire (0-03), Dylan McCormack (2-05) 1 free, Cíarán Murphy (1-01), Niall Gray, Ronan Bleakley (0-02).  Subs on the day; Cían Gray and Gabriel Gray. Our minors played Clonbroney in the league on Sunday evening last.  The good evening made for ideal conditions for football. Minors had no league action over the past weekend.  Next outing is at home this Sunday against Clonbroney. Our under 14’s play their first game of the championship this Sunday at 5pm when Shannon Gaels are visitors. Well done to all children who attended the Cúl Camp in such large numbers.

Minor club notes for Friday 29th June 2012.

On Tuesday last our schools team took on Drumlish in their final played in Pearse Park.  The evening was sunny and both teams served up an action packed game for the good sized crowd.  Having met on a few occasions already little separated the sides in their earlier match ups and this game followed a similar pattern with extra time needed to separate the sides.  It was score for score in the first half.  By half time the score was Dromard 2-04 Drumlish 1-06, with the Dromard goals coming from Conor McGauran and Aaron McErlean.  On the turnover it was Drumlish who hit a purple patch scoring an unanswered 2-01 in a spell where they dominated.  Conor McGauran struck back with a goal and this was followed almost immediately by a Cian Cassidy point from play.  A Drumlish point from a free followed and Dromard's response was another Cian Cassidy point.  Trailing by two points with time almost up it was Jason Murtagh who scored a goal to lead by the minimum of margins.  Our opponents weren't finished yet and the broke up field to win a free that was converted to leave the score deadlocked Dromard 4-6 Drumlish 3-9.  Extra time followed with the team in blue and gold finding renewed energy to score 5 of the 6 points scored in the first period leaving it 4-11 to 3-10.  Keeping the pressure on in the second period our team added a further 5 unanswered points.  While it was Drumlish who goaled late on it was Dromard who captured the title on the score 4-16 to 4-10.  This was a great team effort with every player playing their part in this win.  Captain Niall Gray received the cup on behalf of the team and Eleanor  Gray was presented the player of the game award.  Great credit goes to team trainer Padraig Dennigan who was ably assisted by Aoibhinn O Neill, who both put in a big effort into the preparation of this group.  Team and scorers; Cian Gray, Gareth O Hara Allen, Liam Donohoe, Enna Mimnagh, Jason Murtagh (1-3) 3 frees, Ronan Blakely (0-3), Cian Cassidy (0-4), Elanor Gray (0-2), Niall Gray, Conor Mc Gauran (2-2), Aaron Mc Erlean (1-2).  Subs used.  Shane Grimes, Gabriel Gray, David Donohoe and Conor Sheridan.  Not forgetting injured players Cait Murphy, Daragh O Toole and Ciaran Murphy who all played important roles on the road to the final.  Pictures of final can be found on the Ray Donlon Photography website. Our u13s travelled to Moran Park on Monday last. However the game did not go ahead due to a waterlogged pitch. On Tuesday last our schools team played Kenagh in Pairc na Gael.  The Kenagh lads had the advantage of a slight breeze in the opening half and it was they who went into an early lead.  Our team did enjoy a good amount of possession but were unlucky not to convert this into scores.  The second half saw us continue to play with determination and we picked off some fine scores.  Players on duty and scorers;  Liam Donohoe, Daragh O’Toole, Cíarán Murphy (0-01), Cáit Murphy, David Donohoe, Jason Murtagh (0-05) 1 free, Ronan Bleakley (0-01) 1 free, Eleanor Gray, Gareth O’Hara Allen (0-01), Niall Gray, Cían Gray, Gabriel Gray, Shane Grimes. On Thursday our under 14’s have Carrick Sarsfields as visitors in the league at 7pm. Well done to Longford seniors on their league success at the weekend.  Congratulations to clubmen Damien Sheridan and Francis Mc Gee who played on the evening.  Well done to Jason Murtagh who also got the opportunity to play on the Croke Park sod in the half time underage exhibition game. On Tuesday our under 16’s played their last game of their division and finished on a high note with a win in a high scoring encounter.  Steady rain made conditions difficult for players but it certainly didn't affect the entertainment level of this game. There were plenty of goals scored by both teams and at half time our team held a 3-09 to 3-03 lead.  The second half saw a total of 12 goal scored with the visitors scoring the majority.  However our boys were able to find their point scoring range and by full time we were ahead on the scoreline of St. Francis 8-18 St. Mel’s 10-06.  Team and scorers; Oisín Hourican, Cillian Hourican, Joseph Reynolds, Barry Connell, Liam Doherty, Bryan McCormack (2-06), Dylan Masterson (0-04), Peadar Kiernan (1-04), Conal Murphy (1-00), Martin McStay (1-03), Dylan McCormack (3-01).  Subs; Brian Kiernan, Barry Smith and Patrick Mimnagh. With almost a full team to choose from, and with a number of players recovered from injuries and illness, and with a work rate much more true to this teams form, we played quite well on the day against quite a useful and pacy Granard/Ballymore team. It would be unfair to single out individual players as everyone put their shoulder to the wheel from the throw in. Perhaps with better distribution of the ball to loose players upfront, and if we had picked off easy points rather than relentlessly shooting for goals, as scores were very hard come by and the teams were closely matched, we could have opened a gap and not been under pressure up until the final whistle sounded. Overall, well done to all of the panel and captains Stephen Kenny and Peter Mimnagh in this our last game in the Div. 1 Special Minor League. On Thursday week last our under 14 panel played the first round of the league with a home game against Shannon Gaels. A Dylan McCormack point opened the scoring. The visitors replied with a goal and a point. We then struck with two goals of our own. The half time score was St. Francis 2-04 Shannon Gaels 1-04. The second half saw the Lanesboro boys register a few goals. Our players continued to give of their all but they trailed at the final whistle St. Francis 2-09 Shannon Gaels 6-08. We made a good start to the game where our team produced some great passages of play and showed some very good accuracy in front of goal. Clonguish got more into the game picking off scores of their own. While the home side went on to win on the score line 4-15 St. Francis 2-08 this was a much improved performance on our previous outing. Our players took the game by the scruff of the neck there were spells where we out performed our opponents. Good games were had by Stephen Kenny, Robert Cooke, Neil Cosgrove and Peter Mimnagh. A speedy recovery to Bryan McCormack who was hampered with an injury and get well wishes to Joseph Reynolds and Barry Connell who were unable to play due to illness. Congrats to Neil Cosgrove on captaining his school's rugby team to a title last week. On Saturday our u10s had enjoyable practice games with Drumlane of Cavan in Pairc na Gael.  Players present were Jason Grimes, Shane Grimes, Christopher Grimes, Daniel Conboy, Jamie Conboy, Nichole Conboy, Aoífe Brady, James Brady, Oisín O’Toole, Liam Donohoe, Gavin Reilly, Cathal Reilly, Aaron Farrell, Cíarán Murphy, Cían Gray, Joshua Gray and Ian McLoughlin. On Sunday our minors had Ballymahon/Forgney as visitors.  In a game that we could have done better in, there were good performances from Eóin McNerney, Stephen Kenny, Ronan Smith, and Peter Mimnagh. The game was evenly contested throughout and a bit more competiveness and work would have got us across the line. Our minors lost for the first time in their four games of the 2012 season.  It will be a game that our key players and the team in general will want to forget and move on from quickly as they never got going, and did not play anywhere near their current form.  Final score was Southern Gaels 2-20 St. Francis 0-10.  Team and scorers; Joseph Reynolds, Stephen Kenny, Cillian Hourican, Robert Cooke, Ronan Smith, Barry Connell, Neil Cosgrove, Bryan McCormack (0.02), Dylan Masterson, Niall McManus, Liam Doherty, Peter Mimnagh (0-07) 5 frees, Peadar Kiernan.  Sub used; Conal Murphy. The team will get a fresh start to get back on track next Sunday away to Clonguish Og at 12:30pm, please support. On a positive note, it was great to see Robert Cook back and with this game under his belt he will be a big asset in the weeks ahead. Good games were had by Joseph Reynolds, Stephen Kenny and Bryan McCormack. On Saturday last our minor panel played Western Gaels in their opening game of the special minor league.  Pairc na Gael was the venue and favourable weather made for ideal playing conditions.  Our first half performance was lack lustre with a few exceptions.  The half time score was St. Francis 1-06 Western Gaels 2-05.  The second half saw a greatly improved work rate from our team resulting in a narrow victory on the full time score of St. Francis 2-14 Western Gaels 2-12.Team and scorers.  Eoin Mc Nerney, Stephen Kenny, Cillian Hourican, Liam Doherty (Captain), Ronan Smith, Barry Connell, Neil Cosgrove (0-03), Niall Mc Manus (1-01) 1-0 Pen, Dylan Masterson, Bryan McCormack (0-01), Peadar Kiernan (0-02), Peter Mimnagh (0-07) 5 frees, Conal Murphy (1-00).  Next game in this league is away to Southern Gaels in Pairc Ciaran, Newtowncashel at 6.30pm on Saturday next. We didn't have an under 16 fixture at the weekend.  We are due to play Wolfe Tones on Sunday next at 12.30pm in Pairc na Gael.  The special minor league and under 14 féile is due to start on the weekend of 24^th March 2012.

Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 9th March 2012.

On Saturday last our juvenile panel travelled to Maguire park to take on Clonbroney in the opening round of the league.  We opened the scoring with a Dylan Masterson point from play. Peadar Kiernan added a further point but the home side responded well landing 3 points to go ahead. We then hit a purple patch scoring 1-04 without reply.  Peadar Kiernan was the goal scorer.  Our opponents pulled back 2 points before the half time whistle sounded.  The half time score was St. Francis 1-06 Clonbroney 0-05.  After the break the home side gained the upper hand scoring an unanswered 2-04 to go ahead by 6 points.  St. Francis didn't give up and registered the next 2 points with the Clonbroney boys landing a point in reply. The juvenile league commences on Saturday next at 4.30pm when we are away to Clonbroney.  Thanks to everyone who attended the Longford coaching conference on Saturday last. St. Francis Minor club wish to invite parents to a tea/coffee morning in the clubhouse after Sunday Mass in Legga on this Sunday February 26th.  This is an informal gathering to discuss registration of our players from 6 to 18 years.  Registration fees are €10 per player of €20 per family.  The clubs hopes to have all players registered before March. On Sunday last our minors kicked off their season when they played their opening round of the league at home against Wolfe Tones.  Our team settled well early in the game and went on to play some fine passages of football.  While the performance was encouraging there is still plenty room for improvement, so everyone is urged to keep up the training. St. Francis Dromard held their minor AGM on Friday night last.  The meeting was well attended and the following officers were elected. Our minor league commences on Sunday next when we have Wolfe Tones as visitors to Pairc na Gael at 12.30pm.  There are a couple of coaching workshops that would be of benefit to people interested in coaching coming up shortly.  On this Thursday February 9^th Feb a workshop takes place covering "Functional training for club players" and will be delivered by Longford's strength and conditioning coach Dave Hare at Pearse park from 7.30pm to 9.00pm.  On Friday February 17^th Feb there is a goalkeeping workshop geared to 14 year old to adult given by our own Damien Sheridan from 7.30pm to 9.00pm on the astro turf pitch in Drumlish. Longford Coaching and Games Development are holding a Coaching and Games Conference on Saturday February 25^th Feb at the Clonguish GAA complex commencing at 10am and finishing with light lunch at 1.00pm. This conference is geared toward skill development of underage players varying in ages from 8yrs to 18 yrs.  Workshops will be given by imminent GAA coaches such as Paudie Butler, Pat O Shea, Phillip Kerr and Brendan Bolger.  This will be free for all participants.  Anyone interested in attending please contact 087 2437683.

Minor club notes for issue dated Friday 27^th January 2012.

Well done to Bryan McCormack, Peter Mimnagh, Ronan Smith, Robert Cooke and Niall Mc Manus who were involved with Moyne Community school senior team's Leinster championship 3-17 to 5-5 win over St. Mary Drogheda in Dunganny on Wednesday last.  They now advance to take on Tullamore in the next round. On Friday last we had Peadar Kiernan, Joseph Reynolds and Dylan McCormack lining out with Moyne CS against Scoil Dara Kilcock in the semi final of the Leinster U14 championship. While coming out second best on the day our representatives gave a very good account of themselves. Our minor AGM is deferred to Friday February 3rd at 8.30pm.  We appeal to parents and anybody interested to attend. It is hard to believe that a year has past since Cian Smith left us. Cian's first anniversary Mass takes place Friday February 3rd in Colmcille at 7pm.

Well done to Gary Maguire, Sean McNerney and Michael Reynolds on their All Ireland win with Cavan Institute on Wednesday last. Congratulations also to Keith Masterson who represented Ballyhaise Agricultural College in their All Ireland win also on Wednesday last.

On Wednesday week last our under 8’s travelled to Granard to play in the indoor fun league.  We had two teams that played teams from Granard and Ballymore.  Well done to all players who turned up and who played really well on the evening.  Thanks to all parents who travelled.  Players on duty on the evening were Daniel Conboy, Nichole Conboy, Alan Corcoran, Ronan Corcoran, Thomas Maguire, Ian McLoughlin, Niall McLoughlin, Calum McEntire, Kate McEntire, Oisín O’Toole, Rory O’Toole, Matt Duffy, Sean Hourican and Shane O’Hara. Last Wednesday the under 8’s were in action again, this time in Edgeworthstown.  Players on duty were Rory O’Toole, Alan Corcoran, Ronan Corcoran, Aisling Farrell, James Brady, Shane O’Hara, Sean Hourican, Thomas Maguire, Ian McLoughlin & Niall McLoughlin.  This wraps up an enjoyable indoor league program. Junior Scór is coming up on the weekend of November 19th.  Anyone interested in getting involved or giving a hand please contact Peter Masterson 083 3051786.

On Sunday last our u14 panel travel to Pairc Ciaran, Cashel for the Féile Plate final.  We competed gallantly against the useful and physically stronger opposition.  Our young team can take heart from their display in the two Féile games and this will stand to them as they enter their league campaign.  Team and scorers.  Barry Smith, Oisín Hourican, Jason Murtagh, Joseph Reynolds (0.1) 1 free, Luke Mc Entire (1.1) 1 free, Peadar Kiernan (1.0), Dylan Mc Cormack, Martin Mc Stay, Niall Grey, Fíachra Grey, Éanna Mimnagh.  Subs used, Dara O’Toole and Gabriel Grey.  The u14 league starts on Sunday next with an away game with Clonguish at 1pm.  Our minor game with St. Dominic’s was cancelled on Friday last due to a water logged pitch.  This game will now take place this Tuesday at 7.30pm in Kenagh and we also play Granard / Ballymore this Saturday in Pairc na Gael at 3.30pm.  The club are running a Foundation Coaching course on Saturday next March 19th at our club facilities.  This will run from 9.15am to 3.30 pm on the day and will be conducted both inside and outside.  Refreshments will be served on the day.  We have a good uptake on this at the moment and would welcome further candidates. Sincere sympathies to the Donohoe family Legga on the sudden passing of Willie over the weekend.  Condolences also go to the McNally family Ballinamuck on their recent bereavement.

On Sunday last our minor team played Shannon Gaels in Pairc na Gael in round 2 of the Division 2 minor league.  Sean McNerney opened the scoring with a goal from play.  The visitors responded almost immediately with a goal of their own.  We added further scores and by half time had 3-05 on the board.  While we added further scores in the second half our opponents rallied well.  The full time score was St. Francis 6-10 Shannon Gaels 3-03.  Team and scorers;  Dylan Masterson, Ronan Smith, Robert Cooke, Stephen Kenny, Keith Masterson, James Kenny, Michael Reynolds, Neil Cosgrove, Gary Maguire (2-02), Brian McCormack (0-04), Niall Mc Manus (1-01), Peter Mimnagh (1-01), Sean McNerney (2-02).  Subs used, Eóin McNerney, Barry Connell, Liam Doherty and Brian Kiernan.  Next outing for this panel is away to Carrick Sarsfields on Saturday next at 4pm.

Minor Club Notes for issue dated Friday 6^th August 2010.

On Monday evening last our under16’s played St Dominic’s in McGann Park Kenagh. We opened the scoring with 2 points from play. Kenagh responded with a point and we added two further points to leave us 0-4 points to 0-1 up. Our opponents then struck with a goal. However we finished the half strongly scoring 1-4 without reply. Kenagh did pull back a point before half time to leave the score St Francis 1-7 St Dominic’s 1-2 at the break. Despite coming under pressure in the second half we held on to win on the scoreline St. Francis 1-11 to St Dominic’s 2-5. Team and scorers; Joseph Reynolds, Robert Cooke, Stephen Kenny, Brian McCormack, Cillian Hourican, Neil Cosgrove (0-1), Niall Mc Manus (0-3) 1 free, Dylan Masterson, Barry Connell (1.0), Peter Mimnagh (0-5) 1 free, Liam Doherty (0-2). Sub; Brian Kiernan. Next round is against Grattan Gaels this Tuesday in Pairc na Gael. On Wednesday our under 10 were involved in a blitz in Killoe. We had two teams involved who played games against Shannon Gaels, Southern Gaels, St. Dominic’s, Ballymore and Longford Slashers. Again our players played very well and thanks to parents who provided the transport. Players duty were Ronan Bleakley, Jason Murtagh, Andrea Farrell, Aaron Farrell, Joseph Hagan, Shauna Hagan, Gareth O’Hara, Ciaran Murphy, Luke McEntire, Kate Masterson, Cian Gray, Daragh O’Toole, Liam Gray, Amy McLoughlin, Karen McLoughlin. Hard luck to Declan Mimnagh and his county minor team mates who put in a gallant display only going down to Galway in the All Ireland quarterfinal by the minimum of margins.
